Under the previous brutal Syrian regime, anyone who demanded basic human
rights risked torture and abuse, often spending an average of 15 years
in prison. During this time, detainees were subjected to starvation,
extreme torture, and horrific living conditions. Many come out with
dementia, unable to recall their names or identities, and their faces
are barely recognizable. To help families reconnect with these
survivors, I designed a website that uses Artificial Intelligence to
extract facial features, allowing families to search for released
hostages by image. The algorithm accounts for changes in facial features
resulting from torture and other factors.
